One of the harshest winters for a long time was recorded this year with the Northern Hemisphere firmly in its grip. The fact that it came so unexpectedly meant that entire industries were affected, as were people all over the UK. Some schools could not reopen after the Christmas period and this meant that parents had to take extra time off work. Other workers could not get in to do their jobs simply because they could not travel on the treacherous roads.

But in the midst of all these problems, one industry was benefitting from this disastrous weather. The oil industry was the big winner in all this chaos. And to be perfectly honest it probably could not have come at a better time. 2009 was a tough year for the oil industry as there was an unusually low demand for oil and oil distillate products.

The demand for oil and oil products is obviously higher when the temperatures are colder. And this year they were probably the coldest that they have been for a long time! The result of these cold temperatures was an increased demand for oil which led to increases in prices. And although most of us do not like to hear this, those in the oil industry obviously love it.

But it is not all good news for the oil industry; even though this will have helped, it will not totally solve its problems. Even though this wintry weather brought many countries to a standstill, it was not long enough to ensure a complete recovery for the oil industry. Even after the amount of oil used by British households increased dramatically during that period. And most of us would have preferred not to have had this weather even though it did a lot to help the oil industry!

Getting the home heated up during winter can be very expensive. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Many individuals are now changing over to cheaper home heating oil though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with the cheapest heating oil ensuring they can always heat their home in winter.
